The birth place of hockey is Asia and Persia, having devised it about 2000 B.C
Modern hockey, as created in England, resembles closely games once popular in the British Isles. Today it is a world popular sport.

Hockey is a team sport played on a large playground is rectangular in shape. It is 100 yards long and 60 yards wide. The longer boundary lines are called the side lines and the shorter ones are called goal lines. All lines are three inches wide throughout. The field of play is marked by the goal lines and the side lines, 5 yards on either side of the corner flags. This is for corner hits.

The rules of hockey may at first seem complex and confusing but soon one can easily master the basics of the game. The game is played between two teams of eleven players.

A spot, called the penalty spot or stroke mark, is placed 7 yards or 6.4 m from the center of each goal.

The objective of both the teams is to play the ball into the goal, which will score them a point. The team should also prevent the opponents from scoring a goal. The game begins with a toss of a coin. The winning captain then chooses a starting end.. The game time is divided into two equal halves of 35 minutes each, with five minutes for half-time.

All players must start in their defensive half, but the ball may be played in any direction.

In field hockey, field players are not allowed to use their feet (or any other parts of their bodies for that matter) to control the ball.  Only the goalkeeper is allowed to use hands, feet, etc. to stop or propel the ball when defending in his or her own circle.

Scoring a goal in hockey is very interesting. There are only certain ways it can be done: from a Field Goal, from a Penalty Corner, and from a Penalty Stroke.

A regulation length hockey match lasts 70 minutes - which is broken into two halves of 35 minutes each with an interval of between 5 and 10 minutes. The team with the most goals at the end of the 70 minutes is the winner.  It is also possible for a match to end in a draw (or tie).

The match is controlled by two umpires. Basically, each umpire controls half of the pitch although they work cooperatively in the middle part of the pitch.

For bad or repeated offences by players, an umpire can show them a card.  A green card is a warning – essentially telling a player not to do that again!  A yellow card means the player is suspended from the game for a minimum of 5 minutes or whatever time the umpire decides depending on the nature of the offence.  A red card is for a very serious offence and means the player is suspended for the remainder of the match.  If a player is suspended temporarily or permanently, their team plays with fewer players.
